Sample Environment Engineer - High Temperature

The European Spallation Source (ESS) is a partnership organization of 13 European member countries located in the city of Lund, Sweden. We are currently recruiting for the position of Sample Environment Engineer – High Temperature. This is a critical role that exists within the Materials Science and Physics Support group (MSPS) of the Science Division at ESS. As part of the MSPS team at ESS, your primary task will be to define, select, develop, test, integrate and later operate and maintain, innovative sample environment systems for high and ultra-high temperatures at ESS. Such systems are required for experiments throughout the ESS instrument suite, but during your first years at ESS you will focus on sample environment systems needed to enable first science when the facility enters operation. About the role Your main responsibilities and tasks will include - but are not limited to: • Define, design and build, or choose and procure high temperature sample environment systems, such as furnaces, in collaboration with the instrument scientists; • Test the systems and supervise their control and mechanical integration; • Lead and/or participate to development projects such as induction furnace or lamp furnace; • Work closely with other engineers and technicians within and outside the sample environment group; • Support neutrons instruments and users during operation. This work will include on-call duties at night and during week-ends; • Collaborate with expert teams within and outside ESS: the selected candidate will be invited to join existing research and development projects and initiate new ones. You will be given the possibility to gain additional professional experience at other scientific facilities if needed. You will report to: • the head of the Materials Science and Physics Support Group • the scientific and professional staff for providing expert engineering assistance and technique for construction, maintenance and operations. • the technical staff for providing information and expert assistance. About you To thrive with us in the MSPS Group we would expect you to have the following background:  • Master degree (or Bachelor with at least 7 years of experience) in engineering or one of the physical sciences; • Previous hands-on experience in designing, developing and using high temperature furnaces (above 1000 C); • Knowledge of control systems and programming (Python and/or Labview); • Previous experience in operation and supporting users at large facilities and/or research labs will be an asset; We put great emphasis to personality and attitude: we are looking for a real team player, someone who is sociable, has excellent communication skills and likes to collaborate in a diverse environment. You are reliable, proactive, have a supporting mindset of helping colleagues and users, have the ability to plan and organise your work and are open to learning.  The working language of ESS is English so fluency in English is required.
